walking the dawg - day 1

OK, here goes - I'm givin this bloggin thing a shot.  Mostly I'll be putting up some of my nature photos that I've been taking on my almost daily walks with my mutt, here and there in the West Kootenays (region of BC, Canada).  Got a new camera a while back and have rediscovered my love of photography, and living in such a spectacularly beautiful place just adds to the pleasure.  I guess I'll start with a couple of walks over the past few weeks on the Selkirk College trails, at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers.

This otter was diving for mussels just off the west end of the oxbow.  It seemed to just crunch them up, shell and all, but I couldn't be sure - it was a fair distance away.

The Glacier Lilies were blooming (April 28) and the bumblebees were buzzin.

The foliage was spectacular.

This is the oxbow off the Kootenay River (May 11)

This female Common Merganser has a bit of a punk look.

The male has decided to go formal

On May 11 I saw 3 families of new goslings

Western Bluebird by the Columbia River, April 28

I think it's a White-Throated Sparrow

Utah Honeysuckle in bloom - May 11

One of the few areas to find the Common Camas in the BC interior.

I tried to catch this Northwestern Garter Snake sticking it's tongue out, but it was always too quick!

A couple of flutterbys - I haven't had time to identify these guys yet.

The Selkirk College trails are among my favorites - especially for early spring and later fall walks.  It's about a forty minute walk around the loop - if you don't stop for photos :)

"Yeah, whatever.  Let's go!"
